Auto Trader warns customers against scammers requesting credit card details

by Conrad Murray last modified 2008-01-16 06:14

Auto Trader has warned customers about scammers calling customers claiming to be Auto Trader customer service representatives and requesting their credit card information.

Auto Trader will never contact an existing customer and ask for their credit card details. That’s their message to customers after receiving reports of scammers calling car sellers and asking for their credit card details.

Auto Trader were contacted recently by a customer who had received a call from someone claiming to be from Auto Trader. The caller claimed the customer’s advert would not be placed in the magazine due to a lack of space, and money would be paid back into the customer’s account if they gave them their credit card details.

The customer was soon contacted by their bank, who informed them of suspicious activity in their account – it was revealed the fraudster had been using the customer’s credit card number to buy electrical goods.

The scammer knew the victim’s name and contact details – so never give out your personal information to people you’re unsure of.

Contact Auto Trader direct at enquiries@autotrader.co.uk or by calling 0845 345 3450 if you are suspicious.
