Selling a car and received offers to buy it unseen for export with payment made by bankers draft for more money than I am asking: can you explain this scam?
I am selling a car and received email from a guy in Spain wishing to buy my car. He said he would pay the full asking price plus extra £4000 to have it shipped over to him. He would send me bankers draft if I would send him my full name and address. This is with out anyone viewing the car and he would give me extra £100 on top of asking price! I also received similar one for Ireland in exactly the same format. Details of names Julias Baker +447024093064, Alex Beckley +447054733093
070 numbers are "personal" phone numbers designed to look like UK mobiles. They carry a premium to the caller of around 50p a minute. Their prime purpose in this regard however is to conceal the location and contact details of the recipient.
This is a standard Advanced Fee fraud - the draft will not be a draft but will be foreign, faked or stolen. The idea is you pay out on it in 3-4 days after you bank it. It then comes back and you are left with a large hole in your account - and possibly no car either.
There is some coverage for UK drawn cheques and you cannot be debited if you are told it is cleared after 6 working days, but crucially if you believe there is a problem unless you flag it up to your bank they may not indemnify you as to the loss.
As a rule of thumb:
- don't sell to anyone who has not seen the car;
- be wary of anyone who talks about using a shipper;
- be especially careful if someone offers more than you are asking for it;
- sell the car instead who views the vehicle, offers a reasonable price and pays by a method by which you can be assured you have value.
